Imagine a splint that does not simply hold this bone or that, but is something that covers and restrains all of a person. I felt I’d worn that splint. I can’t say I’d removed it then, only it had loosened sufficiently that the very juices of life, the primordial essence of things, could now come around me.

It scared me to death, but I held tighter to the baby.

I looked out my window and was nearly startled to see a beautiful pasture, edged by a creek at the far side. Cows, some red and white, some black and white, some brown, had their faces to the ground, peacefully grazing. Chickens scratched, turning the soil, close by. One black baby bovine kicked his heels and frisked his head playfully, for the joy of it.

As we approached a bend, I turned to look at Eula. She appeared to belong in the driving seat, despite being so tiny. She slid forward, stomped on the clutch pedal two times, and gently shifted gears, smoothly and quietly.

I felt safe again, as well as deeply impressed.
